Koi in Red, White, and Orange, 2018 (left)
On the journey to painting a large koi painting are the many small paintings of koi that I create along the way. This is one of the studies. The more I paint these fish the more ‘fleshy’ they become. Not because of anything I do, but their sanguine underwater sashays lend these fellas a bit of visual animation even in pictures. I’ve kept the mint green water similar to the koi painting last season. I like this pale green much more than the koi in dark water, or the koi in pale blue water I painted a long time ago.
